Video Post: Delegating Tasks to Get Things Done
Feel free to leave a comment below to share your experiences with delegating tasks. Thanks!
Here’s a transcript of the video:
Hi everyone, Thomas James here, and today I wanted to share with you something that I’ve been thinking about a lot and something that I’ve been working with recently as far as my own freelance business goes, and that is delegating tasks.
Now, I know that this is not a new concept, but I think that as freelancers, we often get caught up in the idea that we work alone. But that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
There are a lot of tasks, everyday in our business, that could be delegated out.
Everything from some accounting tasks to cleaning up your website, maintaining your blog, and general marketing things; all kinds of things that could be delegated out.
For my particular situation, the demands of Escape from Illustration Island are becoming more and more as I continue to take things to the next level, and also on top of that I’m beginning to incorporate the Illustration side back into my daily business duties. After taking a break and kind of redefining my style, I’m now ready to go out and start marketing again.
So, with all these things, something that I’ve been working on is I’m working closely with someone recently to basically have them be some sort of an assistant, just in terms of being able to delegate tasks to them that I don’t necessarily need full control over. I’ll be sharing more about that later, but basically it just comes down to thinking that you can be doing more, or you can be doing more important things that are definitely more in need of your specific attention, and you’ll have more time for that if you just think about ways that you can delegate tasks.
Now, you can do that either by working with a person, such as a web designer to work on your website, or hiring an accountant to take care of your taxes and your finances and things like that, and I know that we have limited resources, but you can do things like bartering with people at times.
And also keep in mind that, although we have limited financial resources, if you do hire someone to take on some of your workload that will potentially be freeing you up to be earning a better living by making sure that you’re taking care of other things such as marketing, contacting clients, and working on the projects that you’re hired to create work for.
Another way that you can be delegating tasks is through services.
For example, I recently did a post on a TeuxDeux app, which is just a to-do list, and that’s a really simple service, but it’s something that I’m delegating the task of keeping track of what I need to take care of to that app.
I’m also looking into doing Agency Access, which I know some of you are probably familiar with, and they do things like building contact lists, handling email campaigns, and things like that. So, I’ll be doing a review of that in the near future after I do some work with it, but basically I’m looking at different ways to utilize people and services to delegate tasks that take me away from the bigger things that I want to do such as marketing my work, creating new work, I’m working on a couple new eBook projects right now, so all these things that I want to give my attention to but I feel like the daily tasks can sometimes take me away from that.
So, something that I highly recommend is to take some time out of your day and think about all the different tasks that you can delegate out.
In my case, the way I think of it is that anything that I don’t necessarily need full control over, or creative control over, is something that I could potentially delegate out. So daily tasks that can tend to feel like busywork for you, maybe you could delegate those out.
So think about ways that you could maybe apply this to your own business.
Everyone has their different set of needs and different set of resources, but there are ways to make your job a little easier or make your workflow go a little better, simply by delegating things to other people or other services.
That’s something that I’ve been working on. Think about how you can apply it to your own business, and if you already delegate tasks, or if you’ve come up with creative ways to offload some of your workload, please leave a comment and share some of your stories and your experiences with your fellow artists.

Hi Thomas, Thank you so much for bringing this up! I too have been thinking about this for some time now. I just feel like I want to get so much more done but I’m lacking in the time department. I’m really excited tho that I finally hired someone to help clean my place. This might sound silly but it takes me 4 hours to clean my place every week and then afterwords I’m pooped and don’t feel like doing anything else. I can say it was worth it and when she was done I still had the energy to create some more! Yay!
That was my first step at delegating. However, I do have an accountant to handle my finances. I plan to take a look at those two services you mentioned, the to-do list and the agency access. How exciting! Thanks again for the post and for sharing.

Hi Thomas, great info. You can only get so far working alone. Learning to delegate is crucial especially for someone who likes to get involved and develop a bunch of different projects.
One of the key things I’ve found in getting any new project done quickly (or done at all) is creating momentum. If you’re the only one doing everything, chances are you’ll get bogged down and never create the momentum necessary to follow through and get things done.
I myself struggle with delegation quit a bit, though I know and understand it is crucial to accomplishing everything I want to do.
Thanks for posting. It’s a biggie.
Thomas,
Great article. Delegation is everything. Let’s face it, we all got into the art thing to create art. Though it is fun to be the master of your own domain and King of all you survey it is at minimum time consuming. Time that could be spent doing the thing you love, ART.
I have found great success in delegating out simple tasks, such as research, and errands to my wife. I’ve also been trading services with a CPA to handle my finances and a Marketing Guru to fill out other parts of my business.
