Podcast Episode 45 – When Things Go Wrong

Episode 45 of the Escape from Illustration Island Podcast features a different kind of episode, where I offer an apology for a HUGE mistake and invite some friends to help me take a look at what to do when things don’t go according to plan. Joining me on the podcast are Scott Hull, Jason Ritz, and Nate Williams.

Great Podcast, Thomas! Looks like you actually turned a FAIL into a WIN.
Working part-time as a pc technician (is that the correct english term? i somehow doubt it) I would like to add the following: Yes, harddisks do fail, but do not worry too much about it. It’s importat to make regular backups, but I see little need to save a copy of a file you’re working on every hour to an external harddrive- I think it’s a bit of overkill.
Harddrives usually show signs of failure long before they drop dead on you. If you’re a bit geeky and would like to check health on your harddrive, burn this to a cd and boot it:

For backing up files I use Puresync, which is pretty cheap and free for personal use:

Be sure to back up to another physical drive, either installed in your pc/mac or use an external harddrive. Also I fell in love with Mozbackup for making backup copies of my mails in Thunderbird and bookmarks, etc in Firefox:

Hi Sven. Thanks for your comment.
I did my best to turn a tragedy into a valuable bit of podcasting, and I think it was a success. The loss of the file inspired me to ask my friends about times that they messed up or things went wrong. Thankfully, my guests on this one were able to help me put together a great episode on extremely short notice.
Thanks for the feedback and links on backing up your files as well!
ROFL, Thomas, this is the most classy “save” I have ever seen (heard) plus I love my song! Let’s work together again sometime soon.
Thanks Maria. Sounds great. Looking forward to it.
Where on earth did you get that song?
I wrote and recorded it specifically for this episode. It’s really me, from the heart.
I didn’t know you were such a singer! Excellent work…
Thanks Alex. One thing I love about EFII is that I get to express so many sides of my creative self.
Awww! Don’t feel bad! THANK YOU for everything you do and your incredible, invaluable resource! Absolutely incredible! Wow! And still a completely inspiring podcast! Great Song Too! Carry on! =) And, Thank You!
Thank you and you’re welcome. I too was inspired by the ideas in the podcast. It’s always nice to hear about the mistakes of others. It helps to remember that we’re all human.
Awee…it happens to all of us! I think you took the issue and created a very cool podcast in the end – thank you! I hope you can have another conversation with Maria sometime :)
Thanks Linda. I definitely turned out alright in the end. I hope to get Maria back for a conversation after a while.
What can I say… EXCELLENT SAVE Thomas. Looking forward to Maria’s redo in the future.
Thanks Carlos. I’m so glad this one worked out.
Your best episode. Really like it.
