Please enter me into the contest, I would love to turn my love and passion for illustration into a meaningful and fulfilling career.

  154. June 7, 2010 1:24 PM

A portfolio critique with Art Rep Scott Hull would indeed be an honour, and would certainly help in jump-starting my (new found) illustration career.

I’m just starting out in my professional illustration career at 50 years old while supporting 4 kids with my wife of 18 years! I’ve been a graphic designer since 1980, although my first love has always been illustration.

Due to lack of career planning, I sort of “drifted” into becoming a graphic designer, and although I continue to freelance as one, I’m slowly but surely migrating towards becoming a freelance illustrator.

I do not as yet have any representation as an illustrator, my web site (even as a graphic designer) is woefully inadequate, yet my current clients can’t say enough good things about the product service & provide them.

My weakness is in marketing myself (no kidding). I have taken steps recently to address these shortcomings so that I may participate more fully in the illustration community, and I am eager to get my hands on Thomas’ e-book.

Can you tell that I’m excited?

    Thanks for listening.

    Steve

I miss REAL critiques like I use to get back in school…I certainly feel like my own island after being away from a school critique environment for 16 years. I often second guess my work when no one is telling me if it is any good or not. So I would love for someone to take the time to give me a real critique…instead of someone just sayin’ “that’s pretty” or “how nice!” when I ask for an honest opinion. So count me in for sure…great prizes!

What’s one thing you learned from the pod cast?

      • June 8, 2010 11:50 AM

Only one? Hmm…. the thing that struck me the most is the importance of how an illustrator feels about his craft and their desire to pursue it. The value of relationships, character and the ability to be prolific…. taking chances and “the willingness to fail.”
        Great interview!

Your book sounds like EXACTLY what I need. I went to art school and majored in fine art, not illustration, so while I try to get freelance illustration work, I really don’t know anything about how to set myself up in terms of a professional, business structure. What to charge, etc, is a complete guessing game for me….

A benefit you can use with a client, hiring a visual specialist can promote innovation while lowering costs. It can be scaled up or down at a moment’s notice. Hiring a high performance artist can turn a confused and vaguely represented organization into a coherent leading entity, thereby raising long-term value.

You are doing a terrific job Tom. I listen to your podcast faithfully and it has gone a long way to educating me about the business of illustration. As a former BIPT fan I think your persistence has paid off and you haven’t pod faded as they did. I’m currently studying graphic design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and you can find my work at http://www.designserge.net. One day I hope to open an Art school in my country of Togo and I’ll take your valuable insights with me.
Please enter me into the contest. Thanks a bunch.
