Incredible podcast Thomas!!! Leif Pang was simply inspiring and the one before with Steven Heller WOW keep up the good work. I can’t stress how valuable Escape from illustration island is for me.

I had a question regarding Leif Pang, he is an instructor at which school in Ontario? Because I graduated from Sheridan College a few years ago and don’t remember that name.

    Thanks Thomas,

Uh-mazing! As usual. I loved Leif’s story about hsi first encounter with an art director. It really shows how important presentation is.

Do you have a link to that CBC podcast Leif assigned to his class?

What a great podcast! Thanks for posting this, Thomas. I loved the part about “emotional labor.” I had a great experience with that recently due to a project I started up for Haiti after earthquake. I think the universe really does respond in a karmic way when we focus on something other than ourselves.

Thanks for such a great resource with all your great posts. I’m a fan.

Thanks everyone – your comments really made my day! :^) And thank YOU, Thomas, for giving me to talk and talk and talk – EFII is a wonderful and valuable resource for the whole illustration community… I’m honoured to be included in it.

This is one of the most insightful interviews I have heard or read in a VERY, VERY, long time.

There has been a real reluctance to give “straight talk” on the industry (in both graphic design AND illustration) given this recession/downturn…so this was quite refreshing.

I appreciate Mr. Peng’s candor. He echoed what many of us have been experiencing for a long time, but have yet to hear anyone come right and say: the landscape has changed.

    Kudos!

Thanks Terry! Leif was very generous to take the time to share his thoughts on today’s industry. I agree that straight talk is exactly what we need to adapt to the changing market.

    Thanks Thomas,
That was a wonderful interview. Leif was able to put into words so many things i have been thinking about but could not articulate.
I loved what he said about artists being “shy actors”. That is so true.
Thank you for a great podcast

Great, great interview, Thomas! This and the Stephen Heller interview provided very interesting assessments of the changes that have taken place in the industry, and from different perspectives that we might not otherwise be privy to.

Thanks Amanda. These are definitely good looks at the industry. Glad you enjoyed them.

    Thanks so much for this.
Also wondered if you have a link to that CBC interview Leif referred to?

I don’t get the reaction of the artdirector who walked out “come back if you have a publication”.
Because if you have a real nice portfolio but you are not published yet i think you have change to be published in a magazine!
If the artist doesn’t notice some great talent he should look twice.

Of course publications in your portfolio will show experience and will convince the artdirector.

If you are not published. You can also make an illustration, put it in a magazine in photoshop and print it to show how you can work together with the article. You will get a better view.
