Podcast Episode 19 – Jon Klassen
Episode 19 of the Escape From Illustration Island Podcast features an audio interview with Jon Klassen. Together we discuss his Illustration and animation work, his experience with working on the film Coraline, and an alternative approach to creating an Illustration that embraces the unexpected.
I also announce the details of the upcoming Illustration Friday Challenge, where I’ll be giving away a copy of Drew Struzan’s new DVD, Conceiving and Creating the Hellboy Movie Poster Art.

Great interview!! Hugely inspirational!
I think i may be instantly addicted to these podcasts
Blair
Thanks Blair! I’m addicted to making them, so you’re in good company.
Thanks for the comforting interview. I’m don’t thumbnail either. Used to feel like I was doing something wrong. For me, the life gets sucked out of images that I have tried to thumbnail first. But, I love seeing other artist’s thumbnails – to me they are often more interesting than the final piece. Currently, I’m being inspired by my 5 yo son’s drawings. Lots of beautiful un-selfconscious energy. He’s definitely not down with thumbnails.
Great Interview! I do love tutorials, books and instruction but I think rules are a contradiction of art. I am always excited for another episode of EFII!
Wow! One of my favourite illustrators. He does some really inspiring work. So nice to hear a little bit about he works and how he thinks. Thank you so much for the interview.
You’re very welcome Mattias. I’m glad you enjoyed hearing what Jon had to say. One of the best things about these interviews is that we get an intimate look at the artists’ thoughts and methods. Thanks for your comment.
