Do you have a blog?

Share it with your fellow Illustrators by leaving a link to it in the comments section of this post.

Feel free to tell us a little about yourself and your blog.  Do you post often?  What do you usually write about on your blog?  You can even leave links to some of your favorite blogs if you like.

Whatever you want!  It’s your chance to speak.

I’ll be inviting you all to participate more often on the weekends.  After all, I post articles about Freelance Illustration tips all week, so why not have a little fun on the weekends?  I call it the Weekend Forum, because there’s been a little bit of interest from the EFII community in having a forum, and to be honest it’s a bit much for me to take on right now.  If there’s enough participation in the Weekend Forums, however, I might set up something a little more formal in the future.  In the meantime, please share your blog in the comments section!  If it doesn’t show up right away, don’t worry.  It will soon!

If you found this post via Twitter, Retweet it to invite your friends!

I look forward to checking out everyone’s blogs.

Thomas

I’m a freelance cartoonist working on several personal projects that I am looking to develop for the licensing industry, as well as working on freelance projects that come my way.

My blog is pretty much a “sketch a week” concept that I’m using to practice techniques and recently use as a way to pay tribute to characters that have had an effect on me.

The weekly post concept is proving a little difficult to maintain right now, but that’s the goal.

The URL for the blog is http://www.martytoons.blogspot.com/

Wow, that was fast! You even beat me to the punch. I like the Kiss cartoon on your blog. Pretty hilarious. Thanks for sharing!

My blog, and my Illustration career in fact, has been on hiatus while devoting most of my time and energy to Escape From Illustration Island, but I’ve started it up again, which is what gave me the idea to ask about everyone else’s blogs.

You can find my blog posts integrated into my Illustration site here: http://thomasjamesillustration.com/

I generally write about new work, the occasional tutorial, and a series of posts that I need to get back to called How to Work With an Illustrator, where I hope to enlighten those not quite familiar with how to work with a creative professional.

    What’s your blog?

Thomas – thanks for the invite to share…

My blog, THE QUOTIDIAN JOURNAL, is comprised of a collection of reflections, quotations, books, and art. I try to do a short post daily and am big on short and simple. I have recently been attempting a style of illustrations made from one continuous line and am posting those at the site…

    Hi,

Thanks for the opportunity to share my blog.

I’m a freelance illustrator and post regularly, highlighting recent projects, both commissioned and personal. With each post, I like to talk about my process and inspiration behind the work, as well as share things I learned during the job — kind of giving viewers a glimpse behind the scenes of an illustration.

    It may be found here:

Thanks, again, and I look forward to seeing you there!

My cartooning & illustration blog mostly focuses on recent artwork, with the occasional Photoshop or Illustrator tip thrown in.

I have been doing more live video artcasts and have been posting the final recordings on the blog as well. I’m planning to add more client-focused posts in the future.

I try to post once a week by setting up 4 or more posts at a time and scheduling them, but I always end up missing my deadlines after a while – usually because I am busy with current client projects.

    • January 23, 2010 4:59 PM

      Hello George,
Keeping up with blog posts is definitely a challenge, but it’s a great way to keep yourself accountable for creating new work, don’t you agree? I especially like it when artists post tutorials on their site. Thanks for participating in the first ever EFII Weekend Forum!

      • January 23, 2010 6:39 PM

Yeah I try to do the occasional tutorial on the blog as well. I always try to post sketches and talk through the process of creating each project.

I’ve been fortunate to have clients keep me on the ball for the new work, but it’s equally important to share those with the internet, as that’s what draws in new clients and new fans. Each new post is a new promotion as far as I’m concerned :)

I have two blogs, one for animation work in ToonBoom Studio and one focused on creating and promoting webcomics.

      Thanks
      ciao

      • January 28, 2010 3:56 AM

I certainly hope you find the articles and tutorials related to ToonBoom to be helpful and informative. I’ve gotten lots of good feedback from people who have found them useful. I haven’t posted any new ones recently just because I’m so busy, but I have a current animation project that I will eventually turn into a whole new series of “how to..” articles soon.

  12. January 23, 2010 4:53 PM

    Hi Thomas,
Its been great watching the site develop over these past few months. Thank you. EFII is just getting better. I love the Weekend Forum idea.

Well heres a bit about my blog.

I basically have two blogs that i update regularly.

    http://eddycrosby.com/
This is for my illustration work. Finished pieces, rough sketches, work in progress photos all go here. It’s part of my wordpress site (wordpress.org) though i made the front page my portfolio page. I try to post something every fortnight.
Before this i used blogspot http://edwardcrosbydesign.blogspot.com/

    http://ecofugal.blogspot.com/
This is my inspiration blog. I bookmark a lot of stuff but my bookmark list is like a bottomless pit. If i come across something that inspires me or might be useful for future refernece, weather it be a flickr site or a link to art materials i add it here. I don’t write much content for it. Its really like a visual bookmark.

    Cheers
    Eddy

    • January 23, 2010 4:57 PM

Thanks for the feedback. I’m excited about the Weekend Forum idea too. I’m always looking for new ways to invite my fellow Illustrators to participate in the site. Thanks for sharing!

  18. January 23, 2010 5:10 PM

My blog is http://duncantonatiuh.wordpress.com/ My illustrations are inspired by the Pre-Columbian art of Mexico, but I do them digitally and address current issues that relate to Mexico and the US.

In my blog you’ll find my editorial illustrations of topics like the drug war, immigration, the national soccer team… I also do children’s books and there are images of them there. I post something new every two weeks or so.

and I have another blog which is in Spanish and has mostly the same content http://duncantonatiuhmex.wordpress.com/

    Hey Thomas,

My blog is http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/teresamurphy. I’ve only recently start blogging my art so there isn’t much there. Not to say I haven’t blogged, I just never blogged about my art, which is strange. :D So sadly, there isn’t a lot of different art there like there is on my website. That should change soon as I update it with more samples of my work :).

Thomas, this EFII site is awesome! I follow you on twitter, downloaded all of your podcasts, and I am still absorbing as much content as I can. My blog is http://ollicedesign.blogspot.com/ and It’s purpose is to help bring in viewers to my website through search engines. Problem is, I don’t illustrate enough or I don’t write enough. I have plans to change all of that. Thanks for all the inspiration!

    Good Day all!
This is such a wonderful website. Thank you for all your hard work!

A Love Of Drawing is a blog created by illustrator and designer Danielle C. McManus. Danielle begins each day with a cup of coffee and a million and one things to do on her ” To Do” list.
A blog is a place for her to share her ideas, thoughts and art. Each day her art takes her someplace different. Drawing is a part of who she is as a person and as an artist. It is why she loves it. Have a look and enjoy!

  42. January 23, 2010 6:12 PM

I’m not a professional illustrator. It’s more of a serious hobby. (Though I do sell the odd watercolor painting from time to time…just not enough to allow me to quit my day job!) :-)

My blog is…well, had to describe. It’s a humor blog….with original stories and writing, which I like to illustrate with my own cartoons. I’m working on a few projects, which I eventually hope to publish, including some kids’ books.

The latest are my Viking stories, which seem to be a hit.

Anyway, I’ll let you be the judge. You can check me out at :

    Hi Thomas,

I think the weekend forum is a great idea and great way to draw attention to illustration blogs.
    My blog is at http://bunsenbrown.blogspot.com/
It’s mostly concept art and I try to update it once a month or so. Since it takes about 2 yrs between doing some concept art for a game and being able to legally show it, the majority of the pieces on my blog are done for fun and to simply keep in practice.

    Cheers

Thomas How do you do it! It’s difficult just to find the time to benefit from all that you are doing.I can’t imagine how much time it takes you to provide all that you do! As one who appreciates your self-sacrificing endeavors in building what is a great community I applaud you!
I’ve just revamped my Blog in an effort to promote my Sequential work GREW.
I hope everyone gets a chance to check it out.

Thanks again Thomas for all you do.

    I have a sketch blog at http://cacodaemonia.wordpress.com

I haven’t posted any sketches recently, though, since I haven’t been doing any non-commission work. Hopefully I will be able to get back into the swing of things soon.

    • January 23, 2010 9:28 PM

Hey Chelsea, Sometimes too much commission-work is a good problem to have. Congratulations. I hope to see more sketches soon, though. You do great work. Thanks for posting.

  76. January 23, 2010 9:08 PM

Thomas – thanks for your wonderful contributions to our illustration community! It does not go unnoticed. I’ve recently posted some new work on my hungry blog. I am not a frequent poster, but this is something I’d like to change by adding process work and color inspiration. Enjoy!

Hi Thomas & everyone with a blog to share,

This is a great idea and I can’t wait to look at all these blogs. Could take some time ;) I’m new to EFII and I already find your posts and info so useful and inspiring! I’ve been painting for a long time, but pursuing commercial illustration & licensing is still bit of a mystery to me. I really appreciate the work you put into this Thomas!!

My blog is http://www.blipadee.blogspot.com and it’s a mix; I share aspects of my work as a muralist, illustrator and scenic artist in the film business, profiles on other artists and designers, businesses and life in my Brooklyn neighborhood, as well as inspiration, influences, travel… lots of photos :D Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks again for letting us share, Allyn

Check out my post on Jan 7th, 2010 about working on AVATAR!

I’m a painter and a advertising designer that enjoys combining hand made art with the digital technology available. New to blogging since January 1st, I plan to make this my sketch blog and about anything visual that inspires me. And, as you said Thomas, a way to keep myself accountable for creating new work. Updated at least weekly.

I’ve already bookmarked some of these blogs. More inspiration!
    Cheers!

Hello all! I saw this on twitter and thought I’d come join in on the fun. My name’s Angela Sasser and I am a combination author-illustrator working out of Georgia. I’m mainly a traditional fantasy artist and creative writer currently working on an art instruction book which will be published mass market next fall. My interests lie in both writers and artists, and that creative intercession between the two.

Many of my posts are about finding inspiration, helpful product reviews on equipment for artists, surviving in the business, e-marketing for artists, and my own journey towards entering the professional world. The odd bit of folklore pops up on my blog at times as well while I research for my own projects.

If you’re interested, my blog is here:

I usually post some of my scattered sketches and renderings, mainly in the classic hero or original creation genres. I love traditional illustration and vintage comics characters—right now I’m more focused on computer programming, but I still find time to occasionally post something new or at least view-worthy.

I use my blog to tell the world (or at least those 10 visitors a day) about the illustrations I’ve done, my progress, my process etc., or at least post best of my new works and tell something about them. I also really would like to have some comments (good and bad) about my creations.
I try to update my blog regularly but, you know, sometimes I’m too busy, sometimes too lazy and sometimes there’s nothing to post about.

Some pretty cool works I’m discovering on here Thomas!

I keep two blogs, which I update ideally every week, but often turning to a few times a month– using what I titled a ‘sketchblog’ for sketches might actually help~ It often ends up that I post pieces in pairs..

My main one is a mix between sketches, new work, and sometimes announcements under
    Sketchboy01.

The other one is one with work specific to Storyboards.

  105. January 24, 2010 2:50 AM

Hi all! Thank you Thomas for this opportunity …

    My blog is at http://planetmithi.blogspot.com
I’m a scientist re-training as an illustrator, and the Blog started out (3 and a half years ago) as a way for me to document my progress (and share it with my family and frineds around the world…). Its mostly been about documenting college work. I also used to spend a bit of time explaining the brief and what the tutors were expecting us to learn from it; so people who hadn’t gone to art college could get a sense of what its all about.

Nowadays, it has my other creative endevours too (like all the crafting I did for my wedding); and other bits and bobs of non-college stuff I’m doing, as long is its vaguely creative/ illustration based (the blog used to be susbitled “Mithi’s Creative Journey”).

I’m so glad I’ve been doing this over the last few years as its kind of like a portfolio now – although I have set up a porfolio site – the blog gives far more of my personality.

And while I’m commenting, can I say how lovely it has been to listen to the EFII podcasts while working in the studio. What a great resourse this website is! Thank you again Thomas!

My blog is http://michelledegruijl,blogspot.com. I’m a graduating Illustration student at the Utrecht School of Arts, in Holland. There are some works I did for school assignments, but there’s also a lot of free work and sketches.
I’m currently working on my final project, and I’m planning on posting that process as well!

Again, thanks a lot and I’m gonna treat myself to some nice blogs posted here!

Illustration has been my focus over the past year. I’m a partner at C3, the developer/publisher of the children’s book series The Quirkles – http://www.quirkles.com – and still spend quite a bit of time contributing the ever expanding universe of these little science and literacy creatures.

Best wishes to all of you in the New Year!

My name is Gilliom and I started my blog “Monsieur Bandit” around the beginning of this year to share my interest in graphic design, illustration and comics. This makes for quite a nice mix of topics, styles and artists and since I am from Belgium, I sometimes post articles on things going on here, people you might want to keep an eye open for…

I work myself as an illustrator and writer (for comics) so once in a while I put up some of my own work: sketches, graphics, bits and pieces.

Feel free to visit at http://monsieurbandit.blogspot.com/

I have new stuff to show all the time…

Wow,so many responses. Guess people are dying to share. This is what I get for waiting to respond, now I’m all the way at the bottom.

Anyway, my main blog is natebear.blogspot.com, where I post all my new illo work and pesonal pieces.

Then I got crampedcomics.com which is where I share my comics, mix of personal, political, and weird. If I draw a comic it goes there.

Then there is n8br.tumblr.com. That’s the one you wanna follow. It reposts the contents from my other 2 blogs in addition to great art I share from other peoples blogs and whatever random thoughts pass my mind. Maybe a sporatic harmonica solo or two.

Also sorta excited about that one since I just re-did the template and drew a fun new header.

Ok now I gotta go look at all these other blogs. Maybe your work will end up in my tumblog.

Don’t worry, Nate. Something tells me your comment will soon be in the middle as more people share their blogs. Thanks for posting!

At least that is the purpose of the blog, because I like to write. I try to write regularly, but I can’t always do it everyday.

Anyway, here’s my blog, and yeah, my latest post was begging for votes. I haven’t updated since then because I’ve been rushing to finish up a couple jobs:

I’m a part-time-to-full-time illustrator depending on how much work I have at the time, but I also a day job I’m hoping to be able to quit before I burn out. Whew!
I haven’t quite narrowed down my field…I thought I wanted to do sci-fi/fantasy and RPGs, but my style doesn’t quite seem to fit the field. I’ve been getting a lot of requests for tattoo designs, and I like doing them. I’m trying my hand at some t-shirt designs. I’m going to give children’s illustration a shot. Hi, I’m at http://valwip.blogspot.com/

I’m trying to get a foot in the door when it comes to illustration and design, having recently retrained for a HND in Graphic Design. My blog is mainly there to point visitors in the direction of my Cafe Press shops, where I have a selection of 13 designs available to be printed on T shirts and giftware. I would love to put more work up but I don’t feel it’s worth it until the existing ones are selling.

So at the moment, although I do blog about my own work, most of my posts are about other popular arts, design and media subjects that inspire (or should that be distract) me. I like to keep it a bright, interesting and fun site to visit. I post at least once a week, often more (I did a whole advent calendar throughout December) and every day I put a new link up to one of my favourite Cafe Press products.

I’m struggling to get people to follow my blog so I’d really appreciate it if you came over and had a look. I’ll definitely make time to check out everyone on this list, too. Thanks!

Anyways, I’m a children’s book illustrator. I work in watercolor and finish up digitally. I usually create sweet characters like babies, toddlers and animals.

Hello! I’m also a children’s book illustrator and my blog, CYNchronicity, focuses on daily doodles, IllustrationFriday.com challenges, random sketches, and I try to offer some helpful info about materials, being an illustrator, etc… Sometimes I blog off topic a bit, if I’ve traveled or if the mood calls for something inspiring but not necessarily art related. I try to blog once or twice a week, but that slowed a bit recently. I traveled to India for three weeks in December and just started Yoga teachers training, so I’m rearranging my blog schedule slowly but surely.

    Hello world, I’m an illustrator.

    Here is my blog:

    http://jameselston.blogspot.com

  273. January 26, 2010 12:54 PM

I keep a blog to share my latest drawings and art as I create it; I am fascinated by the drawings and studies of artists as they work on their more “finished” creations, and it was a logical step for me to show my work in progress. The blog is also a great way to share some of the images / illustrations I run into on a daily basis -we are avid collectors of visuals, and I get exposed to so much great art via illustrationmundo and other blogs than it is also natural to share some of my own discoveries.

  274. January 26, 2010 1:57 PM

My name is Steve Faramelli. The purpose of my blog: http://freshandmodern.com/blog/
is to document my return to being an artist. I’ve been a graphic designer and manager of designers for the past 14 years, but am now trying to return to my true love of illustration and fine art. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, emphasis in Illustration, and have yet to venture into anything remotely resembling an illustration or fine art career.

It’s just beginning really, but helpful to me to visually review my own work whilst it progresses.

My blog can be found at http://paintportraits.tumblr.com/
Any critical feedback would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ruth.

It is really really brand new (my first blog).

In the explorer’s spirit, I will post my experiments as I discover and learn all I can about drawing, illustration, painting, and any worthwhile artistic discipline I find interesting.

Like most of you, I will be sharing work in progress, finished pieces, and perhaps most importantly, my experiences mixing and matching techniques and disciplines.

I hope to provide interesting content, but mostly, I will have fun experimenting, and showing you folks what I think may be an unconventional creative and functional approach to creativity and art.

Thanks go to Thomas James, and all my great newfound artist friends whom without their encouraging words I would still be posting onesies on the free image services all over the web.

I hope you enjoy my upcoming posts, and thanks so much for your attention.

    Have a great art day/night!

blogs make a good learning journal,

its a massive endless sketchbook, but you’re not constricted to one size book or type of paper, media, can even be cg.

What i like about them is that it isnt as formal as a portfolio, you can talk about what you like and dislike, prospective employers can look at your work in a completely different light, and they get to know you more as a person not just an illustrating machine.

  331. February 7, 2010 5:01 PM

Thank you, Thomas, for creating such a inspiration collection of illustrator blogs! This is a fantastic resource – I know I’ll be returning here many times.

We just started our blog, Fibro World in January. I’m new to illustrating, but I created cartoon avatars to represent myself and Fibro Mom. Some people choose super heroes, I selected super hippos! The hippo illustrations have really helped me blog about a difficult subject — our daily triumphs and setbacks coping with fibromyalgia and chronic pain.

We post several times a week and have already been featured by Alltop. I love illustrating and can’t wait to start using your tutorials to improve my skills. If anyone has any tips for me, I’m all ears!

  348. February 27, 2010 7:36 PM

I have two blogs, one for my design life and one for my “art” life. Alphabet Roadtrip (http://www.alphabetroadtrip.com) is a site connected to my primary design website. Here I post images of found letters and signs with short essays or prose-poems about letterforms and sense of place as well as recent letterform design work. In the section called “Signs I Like” I welcome people to send me found signs that evoke the naive, unschooled, quirky, and melancholic mysteries of life. My primary business is as a letterform artist and calligraphic illustrator.

My fine art site is a hybrid of fine art and design language and you can visit at Iskra Fine Art (http://www.iskrafineart.com). Here I post projects in process, galleries of finished work, photographic inspiration and quite a bit of writing. I post when the spirit moves, on the theory that there is, um….enough out there already so I better be sure I’m adding something I like!

Thomas, this thread is a great resource and very generous of you to set up and monitor– I am enjoying seeing how other illustrators and designers use their blogs.

The “I Dream of Monsters” blog was created as an outlet for my art and brand identity using my TM “Zoot Suit Joe” mascot. My style is solid-colored, bold and iconic. I also do expressionism. The purpose in my art is to treat each piece similar to a logo so that they all stand on their own. By day, I’m a commercial graphic / web designer. I really want to get more into the illustration field using my style. To fulfill it meanwhile, I use my zazzle store as an outlet (www.zazzle.com/idreamofmonsters). “Zoot Suit Joe” will be joined by a sundry of characters currently under wraps. I’m also a musician (youtube.com/mandoland73 and myspace.com/mandopadilla) who likes editing video etc. Buy my primary reason for this post is to share the “I Dream of Monsters” / “Zoot Suit Joe” art. I’m excited to reveal an even more appealing group of characters in the near future! Cheers :o) – Mando

Hey there I am a new freelance illustrator, fresh out of the box and all shiny and new… although this whole freelance thing is harder than i thought it would be. I am a freelance illustrator and have a blog on tumblr that is mostly about my experience as an artist living abroad in the UK, currently in a coastal town in Cornwall. I study part-time towards an MA in Authorial Illustration and hope that my blog serves as an expression of my experience of the world: as a young illustrator and lover of the outdoors and of course, storytelling.

Hi, I’m a high school teacher who has been doing some illustration and design work on the side. I’m going back to school right now, to change career permanently and be a creative professional like I always wanted.

I’ve been trying to keep a blog about my creative endevours for a little more than a year. This summer I moved in to my own domain and selfmade website. From then on I’ve written my blog posts in both Swedish and English. Frankly because I want to be a part of the international community of illustrators that gather around things like Illustration Island and Illustration Friday.

    Hi…
I’ve been working as a part-time freelance character designer for a little while, but I’m hoping to make the part-time a bit more full-time in the near future. With that goal in mind, I decided to streamline my web presence and am currently in the process of moving my work from my old site to my new one…which also doubles as my blog. My blog deals with information pertinent to the illustration field.
Topics will vary from techniques working with Adobe Illustrator
and Photoshop. I will mention web sites that have information that
I feel illustrators or fine artists find interesting. If I take a trip to
a museum or gallery and feel it is relevant I will post it on my blog.
I don’t post blog posts every day because I don’t feel I always have
    something worth while to mention.

Hello! I have a little blog – bentami.wordpress.com – which could really benefit from some professional artist, or even amateur artist, input.

I want to be a children’s book illustrator (I think) when I grow up, which I’m hoping will be any day now. I blog about all the things I learn, mistakes I make, and art media I discover … among other things. I try to post every day.

Right now I’m doing 50 children’s illustrations in 60 days, I’m then doing a little give-away of a print, and picking 15 or so of those drawings to finish up and use in my portfolio.

Check it out, or if you don’t have the time now, check it out in a year or so when it will be full of all the awesome knowledge I’m sure to gain. Thanks!
