I received a response from a Illustration rep recently. (lots of r’s in that sentence).

Anyway, it looks promising (I haven’t got the actual contract yet to look over),
but they say that there would be an initial ‘rep fee’ as well as their cut from the work they send me. They’re one of the well-know, (reputable) agencies. They say this is standard.

How much is the range for this type of fee? (I can’t afford a lot just to get started) And is it really standard?

    Thanks.

Are they offering you the option to apply the fee to future commissions that they earn? What are the fees being applied to? Promotion? What services are they promising in return?

to Gregory: It is NOT standard for a rep to charge money to their artists before signing up. No reputable agent in any arts business, be it theatre, modeling, illustration or whatever does this – only the scam artists do. I have a rep and they did not charge me to sign me up. My advice is get away from this so-called rep ASAP.
