Free Andrew Loomis Art Intstruction Downloads

January 7, 2010

Save Loomis!

In response to the recent article, 7 Illustration Books You Need to Read, reader Steven Dovas was generous enough to share links to sites that are offering free downloads of Andrew Loomis art instruction books in pdf format.  These rare, out-of-print books are free to distribute because of their public domain status.

Andrew Loomis created several amazing books on Illustration, Drawing, and Painting, and this is the kind of resource treasure that you only hear about or discover once in a long while.  I know that many of my fellow Illustrators would love to have access to these great books, so I’m offering download links below.  For more Illustration and Art Instruction books, visit the EFII Bookstore.

I actually got all but “Eye Of The Painter” from a guy, I went to see for portfolio review for storyboards. These are THE BEST books for not just illustrators but for all artists and even designers (namely, Creative Illustration).

To make it short, I love these books. Good looking out.

    Great resources as always!
I can see and download 4 books, but “The eye of the painter” and “Creative illustration” it says they are corrupted. Maybe it’s just me…

      Hey Laura,
I tested Creative Illustration earlier, and it seemed to work. I’ll look into it though. Anyone else having any trouble?

      • August 27, 2010 5:55 PM

Yep, having trouble. Just not letting me download. Guess I’ll try later.

Unfortunately, I’m also having problems downloading ‘Creative Illustration’, ‘The Eye of the Artist’,and ‘ Figure Drawing for All It’s Worth’. The other three I was able to download without problems.

Look forward to hearing from you because Loomis is incredible. Thanks for making his work so available. For that alone, your site is fantastic.

        Sincerely,

        John

P.S. As I read further comments, possible future attempts may yet prove successful. I’ll keep trying.

          Hi John,
I just tested it and was able to download it. These downloads have been getting a lot of activity lately, so that might have something to do with it.

You might try again, and perhaps even on a different browser?

Let me know how it works for you.
          Thanks!

I was also having problems with the three mentioned, although the way around it is fairly easy, you only need to download them off of the original “Save Loomis!” website.

I keep telling myself I’m gonna sit down with these books and firm up my figures one of these days. Guess that’s going on the list of week after New Year’s resolutions.

    Thanks for the links.

      Thanks Tye,

I do recommend you try again. Most people seem to be downloading them fine. Best of luck in the future.

These books are exactly what I was looking for! I always look for books that explain technic and give tips and tricks. I find them very handy to refine my drawing skills and keep me “on my toes”. Just like the new book by James Gurney. I asked that one for christmas and got it ;)

Thank you Thomas for sharing these wonderful resources!!

You’re very welcome Veronika. I know you’ll get a lot out of these great books.

Just seeing the covers of these took me back (quite a long way) to when I used to check these out of the library and marvel at his style. Quite a flashback moment! I ended up pursuing writing rather than art but still enjoy looking at great illustrations and reading excellent blogs like this one!

Thank you ! Thank you! to Mr. Dovas & this blog for making Loomis’s books available for downloading! I had managed to print one off from a different website a few years ago, but before I could do more, they were removed from the internet – apparently due to legal threats. Perhaps they just recently came into the public domain? Anyway, I’m very excited to get my hands on all of them this time! They are treasure troves!

Thanks for the great gifts! I love these books! I started my artistic career with drawing guide books many years ago and these are certainly nostalgic.

  12. June 23, 2010 5:46 PM

Thank so much! Love it! My Mom had given me these types of “how to draw” books, by Pitman Press, when I was a kid. They were some of my first art lessons. These and the ones I still have, are invaluable resources. Andrew Loomis, no less – thanks again!

Thanks for doing everybody a favor in making Andrew Loomis’ books
    available for downloading.
I am an Art College professor and think that “Successful Drawing” and
“Figure Drawing For All Its Worth” are the best books ever in the field of drawing.

The title of that page needs to be fixed, there is a misspelled in the
    word “instruction”

    Hi,

Just wanted to say, that I’ve downloaded all of them on my goodreader and I am mostly going through the books on my way to work and back. I’ve read Creative Illustration and now I am on Figure drawing for all it’s worth. I absolutely love the Loomis’s approach, way of explaining things. I cannot think of a lecture that’s more inspiring for artist, doodler, hobbyist than his writing. Great respect for Mr A. Loomis and big thanks to you for sharing these. A real find.
    Thanks,
    Filip

Thank you for pointing these out. I’ve heard about these for forever, and never been able to find them, and now here they are. A friend told me about them years ago and said how hard they were to find. I wish he were still alive to enjoy the knowledge that they were now easy to get.

Thanks for posting the books. They are very helpful.

Does anybody know the size of the drawings in the gallery section at the end of the “Successful Drawing” book? Are they the actual size of the originals, or have they been scaled-down to fit onto a 8.5×11 inch page.

The copyright would have been expired. It lasts the lifetime of the author+50 years, which ought to have passed a long time ago.

Thanks for these links, I’ve downloaded Creative Illustration and Eye of the Painter, both great books to have. Can’t understand them not being in print.

It is interesting to compare these with Ruskins “Element of Drawing”, Speeds “The Practice and Science of Drawing” to see different approaches over a period of 100 years.

I was able to download Creative Illustration but this was after forgetting I had the tab open to it because when I clicked on it to download the book it opened up to a blank page, no spinning ball (Mac) there was nothing going for a while too, to suggest the tab was possibly a dead link so I left that tab while I was viewing other tabs, I think I just forgot all about it.

A few minutes later maybe 5 or 10, I came back to that tab forgetting why it was still on your link when there it was… that cover… the woman’s eye, the gold text in that orange background…

    Thank you!

My original copy was lost to a house fire too many years ago to dwell on it anymore now… but it was such a loss along with other books amongst so many other things.

    Anyway,

I now have a copy once again, this time digitally so I can keep a copy in a safe place while using one to work off of.
