More Reader-Recommended Books for Artists
The Art Book recommendations keep pouring in from the members of the EFII community.
In response to two recent posts called 7 Illustration Books You Need to Read and Reader-Recommended Books for Artists, which both aim to highlight some great resource books for Illustrators and add them to the growing collection in the EFII Bookstore, and share them with with the Illustration community. Today I’d like to highlight 5 more books that have been given the nod by your fellow Illustrators, so now I’ll let the readers speak. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to give their feedback.
The Business Side of Creativity
Scott Serkland: One of the most dog eared books on my shelf is “The Business Side of Creativity” by Cameron S. Foote. I don’t know if it has been updated recently but it’s a great resource nonetheless.
Business and Legal Forms for Illustrators
Scott Serkland: Another must have is “Business and Legal Forms for Illustrators” by Tad Crawford.
Daybook: The Journey of an Artist
Leland Purvis: Daybook is an artist’s journal describing the life of the mind in carrying a creative life through the complexity of daily living. Very strong stuff, no matter what kind of artist you are.
Leland Purvis: The Art Spirit, by Robert Henri. Henri was an American impressionist and art teacher in New York in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Some of the very best applied-philosophy for artists I’ve ever encountered.
Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn’t Exist
Tariq Hassan: I also would round out this selection with James Gurneys book on fantasy illustration, similar Jon Hodgson’s.

“Behind the Camera” by Ron Schick
Alright, OK, it’s a history book of sorts but any illustrator who puts as much thought and persistence into their research imagery as Norman Rockwell did is inherently going to create a richer, more well conceived composition. The “how to” is there but the inspiration and dedication are the keys. And it is fun, too.
