November 19, 2009

Are you looking for a free place to show off your work with a professional-looking portfolio?

Below is a list of 9 of the best sites designed just for this purpose, in no particular order.  Some are strictly portfolio sites, and some also have additional components such as artist communities, forums, and print shops.  I’ve listed some of their basic features, but it’s really up to you to explore them and decide which ones work for you.

So, post a portfolio at each one or pick and choose your favorites and get your work online!

If you have any suggestions for free portfolio sites that didn’t make the list, feel free to add them to the comments below.

Thanks Wayne. I’ve got that site in the Communities section of the Resource Library, but I wasn’t aware that you could have a portfolio there as well.

I’m considering where I should publish my work online (except for my own blog/site). So I also offer a list of sites that offer free or paid portfolios. http://www.emisfard.com/?p=506

        Hi Thomas, all,

Actually what I was hoping to get somewhere a discussion running about the actual effectiveness of these online portfolios. It seems that everywhere people are recommending these online tools (and other new online tools like facebook and twitter) but at the same time people are not that open as to the results. It would be nice to have some open discussions about results.
For example, some of the online portfolio tools (like flickr and deviantART) seem to be so crowded that I wonder if it’s actually effective to spend time exposing work there.
        Let me know your thoughts….

          Hello Emi,
Thanks for your question. In my view, each portfolio site has its own set of features, so it’s a good idea to try them out to see what works for your style and approach. As for your closing thought about which one might offer the most exposure, I feel that your portfolio site itself won’t necessarily bring exposure. Instead, you have to do the legwork and get out there and promote yourself to direct people back to your portfolio where you hopefully inspire them to contact you.
          I hope this helps.

I’m currently researching the adoption of online portfolio social network sites by High School educators in South Africa. Part of my research is developing an understanding of the wide variety of portfolio sites that are out there; for artists, designers and other visual-creatives.

Your readers can view all the ones I’ve visited and tagged at http://www.diigo.com/user/travisnoakes/online+portfolio. This a page which searches my Diigo (social-bookmarking) account and shows all results containing the tags “online” and “portfolio”.

    Best wishes,
    Travis

This IS a really great list..
One thing that I learned or got feedback on was that Flickr, although a really great site for uploading photos and newtorking…, is not such a great place to brand yourself.

You can’t really customize Flickr with your style at all or change backgrounds etc.
Again though, it IS a great place to upload photos for a quick show…etc.

    Just my $.02

Can I just say what a relief to seek out somebody who really is aware of what theyre speaking about on the internet. You positively know easy methods to carry a difficulty to gentle and make it important. More individuals must learn this and understand this side of the story. I cant imagine youre not more fashionable because you positively have the gift.
