Resource Review – Ping.fm

November 11, 2009

This week’s Resource Review answers a question sent in by Teri Ferrell-Gittins, and it’s something that I’m sure many Illustrators who are using social networking for promotion would like to know as well.

Here’s the gist of her question:

Any chance you will be explaining feeds?  It’s a bit confusing because they all seem to go and come from different places.  When I update my blog it goes to my regular Facebook profile, but not my Facebook Page, nor my Twitter.  When I update my Facebook Page it only goes to Twitter.  Essentially I want to just put one post on my blog to feed to my Facebook Page and Twitter. I know my Facebook profile is connected to my Facebook Page, but there must be a way to set what and where my feeds go.  Any suggestion would be great.

My response to Teri was to check out Ping.fm, which is a free service that allows you to post to multiple social media profiles at once.  The list on their website shows 47 different formats that you can post two.  This includes blogs as well.  So, with a minimal amount of set-up, you can assign profiles to groups and dictate where each post goes.

I used Ping.fm for a short time and found that it wasn’t for me.  In general, I prefer to personalize my posts for the profile that I’m posting them to.  However, for those who are active in multiple social media sites and are looking to automate the process in order to save tons of time, I definitely recommend checking out Ping.fm.

    hey,

ping is a great tool. but as you yourself seem to have used it and prefered the customised posting on the various boards, I have abandoned it, too.
At the first glance it seems very efficient, but you just post totally different on, for example twitter, compared to your blog.
Anyways, thanks for the review and keep up the good work. I love your project, or should I say mission, to gather ressources in one comfy place.

    cheers

A certain amount of automation is fine, I think, and cross-posting makes sense in some ways, but it gets a bit annoying for readers/followers if you see the same thing in three different places (blog, facebook status, twitter, etc.). Services like Ping.fm shine when you really are targeting non-overlapping markets, but saturation can get pretty high, pretty fast, especially when you’re cross-promoting all the ways to connect with you or your site.

Hi Everyone, and thanks Thomas for posting my question. I’m not sure if Ping.fm is for me either, still trying it out. When I signed up and posted, it was like magic to see it go to all my social media sites in an instant. However, I quickly became disappointed when posting an image has proven to be complicated, in fact I still haven’t done so successfully. As you know this is very important being an illustrator. Anyone know how this is done? Again, I must be missing something or the ping.fm site is not very clear on how this is done. Any insights would be appreciated.
