Share Your Illustration

2009 November 4
by Thomas James

Since the What’s Your Twitter User Name? experiment went so well (and still is) I wanted to expand on the idea a little by inviting everyone to show off one image of their Illustration work in the comments below.

Here’s how it works:

1. Copy the URL of the image you want to share from your website, blog, flickr page, etc.  If you dont’t know how to do this, watch this quick video tutorial.  Please try to use images with smaller file sizes (under 500 KB) so that it doesn’t slow the page-loading.

2. Paste the image URL into the comments section below.

3. If you like, you can write a few lines telling us what you do and share the URLs to your website and/or blog.

4. Submit comment.

5. I’ll check in regularly to make the images show up.  (You won’t see it right away when you post your comment.  I’ll need to add the necessary code on my end to make it work.)

VOILA!

You image should soon appear in your post.  I hope everyone enjoys sharing their Illustration with the community and checking out everyone else’s work.  Be sure to check back here in the future to see who else has submitted their work.

Here’s my most recent Illustration, which shows the direction I’m going in these days with my digital paintings. You can find more of my work at http://thomasjamesillustration.com.

Okay, it works! Now it’s your turn. Have fun everyone!

Love the fluid look of this Thomas – the perspective and colours are very cool too, love this direction your going in.

      • 2009 November 5

Thanks, Jonathan. I’m really trying to force myself to give myself permission to experiment as much as possible, now that I’ve learned the basic skills required to create an Illustration.

Cheers! And good luck in Thailand.

Thanks Thomas for letting us all post stuff. I enjoy meeting other artists since we are all spread out over the world. I like this picture you did. I envy the blur and swirl technique and painted look you have.

I create Krampus Kards annually for friends, family and associates and then I sell them the following year on my Etsy shop to regular humans. This year I’m cutting costs and creating a postcard (instead of single fold greeting cards) inspired by an actual old world xmas design from Czechoslovakia. And co-starring my cats. you can find more of my Krampus Kards here: http://krampuskards.blogspot.com/
    THANKS!

I like the freedom this one has – reminds me of Warner Bros. cartoons from the ’50s (in a good way!)

      • 2009 November 4

Thank you. I don’t know if I can imagine a bad way to be compared to 50’s Warner Bros. What was your favorite cartoon?

        Hands down, Wile E Coyote

      • 2009 November 4

I was always a Daffy Duck fan. They seemed to go the most “far out” with his stuff, and he also worked very well with other “actors” like Porky and Bugs.

This is a quick piece of personal art from a series of illustrations I’m doing based on the book “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH”.

I feel like I haven’t had anything new to show in awhile! I’m working on multiple projects right now, so I’m at that stage of having several illustrations in progress and nothing finished. :)

Well, I’ll try one. This came out in Dungeon magazine back in August, and is notable for two reasons (I guess). First, it was my premier work for Wizards of the Coast (yay!) and second, for those who saw my digital painting seminar at SDCC in July, this was the centerpiece of that presentation.

This artwork is the end result of an interesting challenge for a gallery exposition called “Fission of Forms”. The show is publicized as a 3-way collaboration between the Society of Sculptors (SOS), Pittsburgh Poetry Exchange (PPE), and the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators (PSI). Its purpose is to bring about a “transfer of energy”. The work produced by a talented assembly of sculptors are handed off to a skilled cadre of poet’s to inspire their literary compositions. Each resulting verse is assigned to an illustrator who construct an illustration without ever seeing the original sculpture that gave rise to the poem. The intent of the show is not to attempt a re-creation of the unseen piece of sculpture but rather for all participants to tap into a progressive flow of creative energy. The final show married up all three pieces of sculpture, poem and illustration, offering a tremendously intriguing exhibition.

This part of a pen and ink. I’m an illustrator, new to the game, still trying to find my voice. I work in pen and ink, photoshop, and some painter. You can find me on twitter where my handle is “MarkCalifornia.” thanx.

    • 2009 November 5

Hey Mark. Is this the same Mark California that I hear about on A&S ALIVE!? Really cool style you have going on. I know that this is sort of a stupid thing to say to another artist, but this piece has the same feel to it as a Tony DiTerlizzi or a Brett Helquist. Ever heard of ‘em? You might like their stuff.

      • 2009 November 5

Yes that is me, as for Tony DiTerlizzi and Brett Helquist, I haven’t seen their work. I’m more influenced by Ashley Wood, Heinrich Kley, Johnathan Wayshak, and Joseph Clement Coll. The piece above is more Wayshak influenced and is very different from other aspects of my work.

David I just took a look at your site and I just want to say Bravo! You are developing a very strong technique and this obviously informs your character design here which I think is fabulous! I want to see more of this Lill guy and the world your building for him! Keep up the great work!

Oh, why not. =) (First time commenting here, BTW, but I’m slowly working my way through the podcast archives…)

Nice expression in this piece, by the way.

This is the main character for children’s show I created, “The Adventures of Alex the Ape” the show went as far as the pilot stage and was later optioned by Porchlight Entertainment, unfortunately it was never developed into a series, still one of my favorite characters I have designed.

    • 2009 November 5

Great character design Scott – reminds me of a primate Indiana Jones :)

Would love to have seen the pilot episode of this – is it online anywhere?

      • 2009 November 8

Thanks Jonathan, Primate Indiana Jones was kind of the look I was going for, glad that came across. I’m going to look into getting a You Tube account and I will see if I can throw something up the show was actually live action (costume characters and puppets) If your interested there is more info on the property on my website…

Fun. One thing I like about this, is that it isn’t an assignment. i miss out on a lot of those because I don’t have time to work on stuff I’m not already… working on.

Anyway, I was asked to do this by close of business one day. Think it came out nice considering the few hours I had to work on it. Enjoy!

    • 2009 November 5

Nice crisp execution. Is this a straight digital painting?

      • 2009 November 5

Yep, with the exception of a photo of a concrete texture laid into the wall. Its less an ‘illustration’ (no real layout, story, etc.) and more of an exercise in technique than anything else. In the end, its purpose isn’t much more than just being a fancy icon. But after it was all said and done, I liked it enough to want to share. What can you do?

Rodrigo, this is one of my favs on this page so far. One thing about the compostion I wanna point out: there’s a huge parallel between the angles of the two guitars (and the players bodies). I think if you had them at a divergent angle it would energize the composition more.

I know it’s probably sent off to the printer at this point, and I’m not tryin to be a h8r. I already love the piece. I just had to share a small tweak that could put the whole thing over edge of 100% awesome.

This illustration was for City Arts Magazine October 09.The story was about how the monarch butterflies migrate back south for the winter protection of the oyamel fir trees, and that they migrate in around the day of the dead so the people believe that the souls of their loved ones are in the butterflies. My illustration is a shot from a musical puppet show (That I made up) called El Amor En El Viaje or Love on the Journey

        Thanks for the feedback! :)

She is indeed abused. She was one of a pair of images I did foe a group project which was based around the book 2Harris’s List Of Covent Garden Ladies: Sex in the City in Georgian Britain” by Haille Rubenhold. The book is a list, with descriptions of, the prostitutes of that area with descriptions of their services. There is a Facebook page for some of the images collected together.

I am currently updating my portfolio, this is one image out of a series I am creating titled,’ Interwoven’.

Interwoven is a self initiated project that pursues an exploration into seamlessly combining the form of both synthetic and organic elements. This new series of work displays maturity in the artist’s mark making despite being influenced by previous approaches to his imagery.

The series will consist of all original drawings, featuring with what could be described as provocative overtones.

Hope you enjoy looking at my work,

Hi. I graduated from college with a degree in illustration. My style was very personal and editorial. I needed a job so immediately I started working as a graphic designer. For the past 23 years I worked as a graphic designer doing the usual brochure and corporate collateral materials, etc.

So my dream of becoming a full time illustrator kept getting a low priority. Now 23 years later I feel the need to get out there and show my work and get illustration assignments and not just design.

My influences are Dali, Manara, Caravaggio, Ruben, Titian among other classical and modern artists.

    Hope to hear some comments.

    thank you

I was into the “stipple” technique before illustrating this, and so applied it here to this piece that adorned the wine menu of an Italian restaurant in NYC. The restaurant is now gone and so is their wine and menu. I never saved a copy of the menu for records or portfolio purposes. Simple but grave mistake. What do you think?
