Selecting Images for Your Portfolio

October 21, 2009

Escapee

When selecting which of your Illustrations to include in your portfolio, focus on quality.  Avoid the temptation to throw everything you’ve got into the mix.

It’s a good idea to “skim the fat”.

In other words, review your own portfolio on a regular basis, and remove anything you’re not completely sure about.  You don’t want to dilute the waters of your own greatness by including mediocre pieces for the sake of presenting a large body of work.

Your portfolio is your chance to make an Art Director fall in love with you.  Don’t ruin the opportunity by talking their ear off on the first date while only having a few good things to say.

      Hello Andie,
I’ll be happy to take a look at your site and give you some feedback. I’ll be in touch via email.

    Hi Thomas,

Is it possible to critique my portfolio website too?

I think keeping the portfolio fresh and on a great quality level is important, so i agree. Do you think it makes sense to have a website with a “portfolio” and an art archive, I have it this way at the moment, so that interested parties can have a quick overview, and the archive makes sense in terms of licensing, but I guess its important to separate both very well.

Would you consider looking at my online portfolio and let me know what you think? I feel there is a lot in there and I am still figuring out what works best for me as an illustrator in the future.
