Tutorial of the Week – Digital Painting of Creature by Bobby Chiu
For this week’s Tutorial of the Week I chose to highlight a digital painting by Bobby Chiu. Bobby is an active member in the online Illustration community through his YouTube tutorial channel, his ChiuStream channel, Imaginism Studios, and his online Illustration school, Schoolism.
Sometimes the best way to learn is just to watch an artist at work. This tutorial doesn’t offer any tips on tools, software, or technique, but it does give you a look over Bobby’s shoulder as he creates a compelling digital painting in a time-lapse video format. One of the best things about watching time-lapse painting is that it prevents you from getting bogged down in the details. Instead, you are able to sit back with a cup of coffee and get a feel for the overall picture, the artist’s general approach to working, and a more immediate payoff of the completed piece. These are the things that you can take back to your own work with a new perspective and the inspiration that comes from watching an artist like Bobby Chiu.

I found lots of value from this tutorial. He’s an awesome awesome artist… really incredible. Following his techniques was great..
BUT – I tell you, I was drawing at the same time as trying to watch… ended up drawing more and more, just listening to him… he was so inspiring in his words, and his stories, it was incredible. I would just glance up to the screen, and see these amazing colors and strokes, but it was like a double dose of inspiration and ideas.
As a tutorial, it was excellent to follow and think about the techniques. As an inspiring talk for artists? WOW man. I can see what Chris Oatley means … he’s a fountain of inspiration, and truth! talking about drive, motivation, the why we draw, and well… Go ahead and watch it! I promise, even if you just listen to it, you’ll get benefit from it.
Ok… rattling on here! LOL
thanks for sharing!
Yeah, Bobby Chiu is great!
Bobby is my inspiration. Not only is his art beautiful and unique, but he also has the passion and heart to create motivation boosting videos that can be compared to psychology books on self-help techniques.
