Book Review – Pricing and Ethical Guidelines

October 6, 2009

Pricing and Ethical Guidelines

Whether you’re a new or seasoned Illustrator or Graphic Designer, The Pricing and Ethical Guidelines book is a must-have resource to help you with all aspects of the industry, such as ethics, client-relations, contracts, and that elusive matter of pricing.  Compiled by the Graphic Artists Guild, this book helps to illuminate current industry standards so that you can go forward with the confidence that comes from being well-informed.

There are a handful of pretty good books on Freelance Illustration, but this book is the only one I have found that goes into the amount of detail that you really need to know how to run your business.  Where other resources sometimes leave you with more questions, this one answers questions you didn’t even know you had.

I have used this book many times when coming up with a price quote for a project.

I have even gone so far as to scan and print out Pricing tables in order to share with a potential client in a first meeting.  I have found that if you work from the standpoint of educating the client on the industry-standard rates and practices, then this can help them to understand the value of your services, and that you are a professional.

If you only buy one book on the Illustration and Graphic Design business, I highly recommend Pricing and Ethical Guidelines as a reliable ally in the day-to-day battles of your freelance career.  This is a resource that you will find great value in as you refer to it time and time again for years to come.

If you’d like to support Escape From Illustration Island, you can purchase this book here, where a portion of the proceeds will help to make the site and the podcast a better resource in the future.

Hello I’m new to EFII. Really Great site by the way.

I’ve been looking back at some of your past posts. This book sounds really helpful, but I am from the UK and was wondering if you knew of a UK version of this book as it seems like a good resource to have.

    Thanks

    Rebecca

      Hello Rebecca,
I’m not aware of a UK-specific version, but you might try contacting some Illustration organizations in your area to inquire about this. Aside from the the pricing part of this guide, I believe that the rest of the information is universal to all areas. Let me know if you find anything!

Great review of the Pricing and Ethical Guidelines handbook. We at the Guild call it the PEGs. I do hope if you are an illustrator or art director, or anyone else earning your living as in the creative arts industry, you will join the Graphic Artists Guild, where a copy of this incredible resource is free with your membership.

Hey, thanks for the advice, only thing is that maybe you could think of setting up a similar link to amazon.co.uk so by buying the book on this side of the world we are also chipping in to your great resource, thanks
